Study Searches for Best Ab Exercises

In a study conducted by the Biomechanics Lab at the San Diego State University, thirteen common abdominal exercises were measured using an electromyography. This specialized equipment measures the activity in the abdominal muscles during the performance of the exercise.

What does all this mean? Well each abdominal exercise was analyzed for the effectiveness in the rectus abdominus and oblique muscles to determine the best ab exercises.

Thirty healthy men and women ranging in age from 20 to 45 participated in this study. Each person was allowed to practice the abdominal exercise before doing 10 to 12 reps of each exercise. The data was gathered and analyzed.

    Best Ab Exercises

If you are like many people who thought the traditional crunch was the best abdominal exercise then the results of this study will surprise you. Rather than being one of the best abdominal exercises, the traditional crunch actually ranked in the bottom three.

The top 3 ab exercises for overall effectiveness and for the most effective in the rectus abdominus muscle were the bicycle crunch, captains chair and the exercise ball crunch. The most effective in the oblique muscles ranking number 1 3 respectively were the captains chair, bicycle crunch and the reverse crunch.

    Worst Ab Exercises

Although this study only included 13 ab exercises and all the exercises showed some effectiveness, these three showed the least activity and effectiveness in the rectus abdominus and oblique muscles. These three are the traditional crunch coming in at number 11, the exercise tubing pull at number 12 and last was the ab rocker.

Just because these 3 came in at the bottom does not mean you should remove them from your list of abdominal exercises. However, if you are looking to purchase abdominal exercise equipment you may want to consider some more effective than the ab rocker in order to get your moneys worth.

    Effective Ab Exercise Routine

To get the most out of your abdominal exercises and flatten your stomach you want to make sure you are working all the abdominal muscles. The ab muscles include the rectus abdominus, internal and external obliques and the transverse abdominus muscle.

Most abdominal exercises target the rectus abdominus and oblique muscles but it is critical you also include exercises that work the transverse abdominus muscle. This muscle acts as a griddle to help tighten and hold in your stomach.

To get the most out of your abdominal exercises try including several different ab exercises so that you work all the muscles. Exercises like the bicycle crunch work all the ab muscles, including the transverse abdominus. Make your abdominal exercise routine varied and fun. Add new and different ab exercises each time to ensure you are hitting all the muscles and toning all areas.

Homeschooling, as an effective educational program, has undergone numerous debates. In fact, opinions are equally divided between the pros and the cons. Homeschooling, indeed, offers benefits for the child but like many things, there are also some downsides to implementing the program. It is therefore best to know the pros and cons before you get your kid into the program. It is up to the parents to sift through the positives and the negatives of homeschooling.

    Pros

    Flexible structure

One of the things that puts homeschooling in stellar position is the fact that it is highly flexible and dynamic. Unlike traditional curriculum which is fixed, the homeschooling system allows changes, in fact it encourages them.

    Tailor-fit to the child

Because of the fluid structure of homeschooling programs, the lessons can be tailor-fitted to the child’s capability, pace and learning style. There is no pressure to keep up with the lesson of the day and students can start or finish their lessons any time of the day.

    More practical learning activities

Homescholing is an unstructured educational program, which allows for more freedom in terms of learning activities. Parents can actually decide on what to do to better teach the subject. This means that there can be more unstructured learning exercises such as visits to zoos or museums.

    Cons

    Lacking in social interaction

One of the downsides of homeschooling program is the fact that it lacks the social component, which teaches the child to interact with other people. This is especially needed during the stage when the social and communication skills of children are just developing. To supplement the absence of this component, some parents organize social activities for their children.

    Time constraints

Although time is rarely a factor in homeschooling because of the lack of a structure, it only applies to the children. It will be time consuming for the parents, some of which have to leave their work to go full time in teaching their children. Remember that you have to be with your homeschooling child all through out his or her lesson. In addition, a lot of time need to be given to correcting worksheets and making visuals.

    Money problems

Although there is actually no tuition fee for a homeschooling program, the money problems come in when one of the marriage partner has to leave work to teach the child. Remember that homeschooling can take so much time. For parents who both have careers, sacrificing one source of income can be pretty hard for the whole family.

In the March 17, 2009 issue of Life Extension Update, we reported the finding from the Sister Study, a cohort of healthy sisters of breast cancer patients, of a beneficial association between multivitamin use and telomere length, a biomarker of aging. Telomeres, which are repeating DNA sequences that cap the ends of chromosomes, shorten with increased cellular aging.

In articles published in the February and March, 2009 issues of the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, further findings from the Sister Study concerning the impact of lifestyle on telomere length were revealed.

In the February, 2009 issue, Christine Parks, PhD, of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and her associates evaluated the effect of stress on telomere length in 647 Sister Study participants. Telomere length in DNA from blood samples was measured, and stress hormone levels in urine were assessed. Questionnaires completed by the subjects provided information on perceived stress levels.

Study participants, on average, reported low stress levels. “Even so, women who reported above-average stress had somewhat shorter telomeres, but the difference in telomere length was most striking when we looked at the relationship between perceived stress and telomere length among women with the highest levels of stress hormones,” Dr Parks observed. “Among women with both higher perceived stress and elevated levels of the stress hormone epinephrine, the difference in telomere length was equivalent to or greater than the effects of being obese, smoking or 10 years of aging.”

In the report that appeared in the March, 2009 issue of the journal, the effect of past and current body mass index (BMI) on telomere length was examined. Sister Study participants whose BMI categorized them as overweight or obese before or during their thirties and whose weight status was maintained were found to have shorter telomeres compared to subjects who became overweight at an older age. “This suggests that duration of obesity may be more important than weight change per se, although other measures of overweight and obesity were also important,” stated lead author Sangmi Kim, PhD, also of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. “Our results support the hypothesis that obesity accelerates the aging process”.

“We anticipate a wealth of information to come out of the Sister Study,” predicted Dale Sandler, PhD, chief of the Epidemiology Branch at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and principal investigator of the Sister Study. “Not only do we hope to find out more about the environmental and genetic factors that might lead to breast cancer, we also want to learn more about how factors such as stress, diet and exercise might impact cancer and other disease risks.”

“Together these two studies reinforce the need to start a healthy lifestyle early and maintain it,” National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences director Linda Birnbaum, PhD, concluded. “These papers remind us that there are things people can do to modify their behavior and live healthier lives, such as maintain a healthy weight and cultivate healthy responses to stress.”
